Magic on ice

Chris and I  spoke on the phone about a week ago. He had asked me if I would photograph his proposal to his girlfriend Katie. I immediately told him I wished more people would think of this. I was thrilled to do.  We conspired with Joe, the manager of Downtown Ice to make sure everything would work out perfectly.

I arrived early on Friday, which was also the silent opening night of Downtown Ice,  to scope things out since I had never met Chris or Katie in person.  It wasn’t too long before I saw two people who looked very much in love. I knew it had to be them! Joe, the rink manager, confirmed to me that I was looking at the right couple.

Chris and Katie had met freshman year of college but they didn’t get to know each other well until they serendipitously became roommates Junior year in a house full of mutual friends. As they shared more time with each other, they recognized similar passions and traits. They started dating January 16th and Katie’s favorite holiday is Thanksgiving. Chris knew November 16th was the perfect day to propose. T
hey could celebrate with family and friends shortly thereafter. After a wonderful dinner full of surprises, Chris took Katie to Downtown Ice to skate amidst the palm trees and Christmas lights.

I found a good vantage point and pretended to photograph random people skating.  Katie wasn’t in on the plan and I didn’t want her to think something was up.  As they went around and around I secretly captured a few frames of the moments leading up the proposal.

Then Tracy Chapman’s Open Arms started playing and I knew it was about to happen.

Chris spun her to the center of the ice rink, got down on one knee, and asked one of the biggest questions of his life. He got the answer he hoped for.

Ten years ago, I left the mortgage and real estate business to pursue photography, which is a passion of mine. The mortgage business was excellent at that time but I was tired of it. I had a daughter that was just born and I wanted to do something that would allow me to spend more time with her and at the same time do what I wanted. I knew that I enjoyed people photography and soon discovered that I have a very real and special talent for it. I discovered that I was particularly good at capturing moments and revealing emotions through pictures. This came instinctively for me and allowed me to develop a style that was very comfortable for me to work in. My photography quickly became popular in the bay area and I've earned a large number of referral businesses as a result. In fact, i'd say I most of my business growth is the result of referrals from clients and online sites like Yelp. I currently have a studio in downtown San Jose and photograph weddings and portraits all over the bay area and California.
